Director of Operations

Job Posted August 26, 2026

St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, in Montgomery, is a growing multicultural and multi-generational community that is dedicated to spiritual growth, serving our neighbors, and courageously sharing God’s love with all people.

St. Barnabas is seeking a Director of Operations to lead day-to-day operations, capital projects, and strategic planning—creating the infrastructure and support needed for sustainable growth while enabling clergy, staff, and ministry leaders to remain focused on serving others.

Requirements:

  • Serve as a central point of coordination among clergy, staff, Vestry, committees, volunteers, and outside partners.

  • Oversee the daily administrative operations of the parish.

  • Implement strategic initiatives and serve as project manager and support parish leadership in priority-setting.

  • Work with the Rector, Vestry, Facilities Team, and lay leaders on capital projects and long-term property planning.

  • Assist with data management and organization of parish systems and coordination with other staff.

  • Coordinate parish calendars, meetings, events, and operational schedules.

  • Coordinate building use, rentals, events, and outside groups using parish facilities.

  • Oversee the care, maintenance, security, and appropriate use of parish buildings and grounds alongside our Buildings and Grounds volunteer team.

  • Manage relationships with contractors, vendors, service providers, and building partners.

  • Maintain preventive maintenance schedules and oversee necessary repairs and improvements.

  • Help ensure that ministry leaders have the facilities, staffing, information, supplies, and systems they need.

  • Model a welcoming, service-oriented approach when interacting with parishioners, visitors, renters, vendors, and community partners.

Essential Duties & Job Description:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent leadership experience; advanced degree a plus.

  • Five or more years of experience in operations, nonprofit administration, organizational leadership, or a related field.

  • Demonstrated experience supervising teams, managing budgets, and building organizational systems.

  • Experience supporting organizational growth phases, capital campaigns, or facility expansion.

  • Experience with building maintenance needs and project management.

  • Experience in a church, nonprofit, school, or mission-driven organization preferred but not required; appreciation for the Episcopal Church’s collaborative style of leadership and governance is desirable.

General Qualifications

We are not simply looking for an excellent administrator. We are looking for an organizational leader who is energized by helping people and communities thrive. The ideal candidate:

  • Builds trust quickly and leads with humility and servant leadership.

  • Demonstrates high emotional intelligence: navigates ambiguity, influences without authority, coaches rather than commands.

  • Is deeply collaborative and genuinely supportive of clergy, paid staff, and volunteer leaders alike.

  • Can balance strategic thinking with hands-on execution and finds satisfaction in both.

  • Ability to work primarily in an office and church environment, with regular movement throughout the campus and facilities. The ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, stoop, and climb stairs as needed to inspect facilities and oversee projects and occasionally lift and carry items weighing up to approximately 25–30 pounds.

Compensation & Hours

Compensation: $35.00 per hour and eligible for retirement benefits and paid time off.

Hours: This is a part-time position starting at 25 hours a week with flex time available. Some evenings and weekend hours may occasionally be needed for church meetings or events. Typical office hours are Tuesday-Thursday 9:00-3:00 p.m.

To Apply:

This position requires a background check and completion of The Episcopal Church’s ‘Safeguarding God’s People Workshop’ on child abuse prevention. St. Barnabas will set up training and pay any necessary fees.
