St. Barnabas Provides Support and HUGSS through NEEDS

by Fern Ketchum, chair of NEEDS ministry

St. Barnabas provided the funds for another donation of pantry supplies in December to NEEDS (North East Emergency Distribution Services). It was very much appreciated, as the pantry had been running low, especially in personal care products and cereal. This donation really helped toward filling the shelves back up.

We also made a monetary donation which again was much needed. NEEDS had a considerable increase in requests for help with rent in 2019, and the organization depends entirely on donations from member churches and the community to provide this assistance. In 2019, NEEDS had 396 families visit the pantry and provided housing assistance for 37, totaling over $11,000 and help with utilities for 31, totaling over $9,000. NEEDS so appreciates the commitment we have made to supporting this local organization.

As NEEDS continues to grow, we find continued need for volunteers in a variety of areas. If you have any interest in getting more involved in this community organization or have any questions contact Fern Ketchum. You can also email Nicole at communication@st-barnabas.org, and she'll pass along your message.

In January, NEEDS held its annual collection of Hats, Underwear, Gloves, Socks, and Sweats (now called HUGSS drive) to donate to the local schools. NEEDS members collected and distributed warm clothing to schools in the Sycamore, Deer Park, and Princeton school districts. St. Barnabas donated funds to contribute items to the the drive.

NEEDS is so grateful to the commitment St. Barnabas and our member churches and community organizations have made to this drive. There is considerable need in at some of the schools in our local areas, and they are so appreciative of the warm clothing we provide for some of their students.
