FIRST LEGO League Presentation

Parishioner Sophie McCoy is a member of Cyb3rstorms, an ALL FEMALE FIRST LEGO League team at Sycamore Junior High. Erika McCoy is their coach. At the Regional competition in December, the team qualified for the District Tournament! District qualifying teams then compete in the State Championship.

During this Women’s Fellowship meeting, Sophie and her team will present their project, give us a demonstration of their robotics work, and tell us more about FIRST LEGO League.

This should be a fun afternoon to learn about a really cool program and support girls in STEM!

Please contact Tara Pettit for details.

FIRST LEGO League is a collaboration between the LEGO® Group and FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), a non-profit organization that is committed to creating robotic competition programs that will excite and inspire children from kindergarten through high school to excel in math and science.

FIRST LEGO League is a multi-disciplinary program that combines engineering, computer programming, problem-solving, researching, presenting and teamwork into an intense 8 week period.

To prepare for a FIRST LEGO League tournament, teams work to build and program a robot to complete a number of tasks on a competition table in 2.5 minute robot rounds. Teams compete in a sports-like environment where spectators cheer their successes. Teams also meet with Robot Design Judges, who evaluate their robot design, programming and their problem-solving strategies; Project Judges, who look at their research project, solution and outreach; and Core Values Judges, who evaluate how well the group functioned as a team and incorporated the values of FIRST.
